Career Success Tip
I’m a very strong advocate of alternative careers in the sciences, to the point where I taught courses at Cornel College on exactly this concept. Drawing people into the careers within Science and Technology has always been a challenge. Therefore, by providing a spectrum of career options beyond the traditional routes, career paths that are not just linear but have many permutations to them. My area in intellectual property law is one example, investment banking and entrepreneurship is another. Opportunities in the sciences and technologies continue to grow and there is virtually no limit on what people can create and customize as careers.
Don’t get so hung up on the specific field because that’s your current interest. One thing I’ve learned is that you’ll continually learn the building blocks. Our would in just 25 years will look nothing like it does right now, just like 25 years ago, our world now looks vastly differently. The facility to understand fundamentals and be able to flexible enough intellectually, to be able to make that transition over the course of a career is going to be the hallmark of those people who are going to be enormously successful.
